Cycle for Smart Works 2024

For many women, getting a job is a lifeline. It is a chance to escape poverty, gain financial stability and restore confidence. In the shadow of the cost of living crisis, there is an intensified need for the Smart Works service.

Smart Works is a UK charity that dresses and coaches unemployed women for their job interview. They give women the confidence they need to reach their full potential, secure employment and transform their lives. In the last year, 72% got a job within a month of their appointment.

Between 23rd February and 8th March 2024, I will be cycling to raise vital funds for Smart Works. I will be pedalling for a purpose and would appreciate every pound you are able to give to support this brilliant charity.

Well I tried very hard to reach my target but it's funny how life circumstances meant I had to take the car more than I wanted!

But 88 miles! It's a good number to fail with :) Maybe somehow I was actually cycling with a flux capacitor instead of a steadily aging battery LOL.

Ahh I loved doing this and I'm so glad I was able to inspire some of you to support me in this endeavour in support of this awesome charity. I love that I could be part of something bigger for other women in Edinburgh for International Women's Day! So much love and gratitude! Me and Penny, my beloved metal steed, will see you out there on the trails!

Uphill struggles and ice fingers

Tuesday 27th Feb
So I've been putting in the miles now since last Friday! I was worried I might have to do a little more driving than expected (logistical reasons) but so far I've managed to avoid the mom-taxi problems!

My journeys have mostly been a bit wet and very cold. My poor fingers felt like little ice cubes when I got into work yesterday.

I haven't managed to convince my poor old knees to do a level 1 setting on the uphill journey! I have managed level 2 coming in (uphill all the way) and level 1 going home. I'll keep you posted if I can manage the tougher setting on the uphill.

I've been into town for a couple of the journeys and there is a REALLY steep bit I would almost need to walk up if I wasn't on an e-bike so I kept it at level 3 for those horrible spots. I have to think of my cartilage when I'm 80 folks!

Thanks for keeping up with my progress 🙏🙏 I'll pop in again soon (and take a selfie out there in my florescent gear ooo ahh)

Challenge Accepted

Wednesday 31st Jan
Hi! I'm Sarah and I cycle upon a beautiful white and blue Pendleton e-bike. Her name is Penny and her top speed (level 3) is super zoomy. I am capable of overtaking many other cyclists (not proper racing cyclists though).

For this challenge I intend to give Penny a bit of a rest and set her to level 1 for her daily 6 mile round trip commute. It means a little extra work for me, but hey that's what a challenge is all about right?

I do on occasion also cycle on a mountain bike (make and model unknown to me at present). It is too small for me. It is old and works through sheer hope and determination. The gears are temperamental and the wheels are small. It is a pain to cycle (literally- the seat is not large and cushiony like Penny's), and I discovered recently I barely cycle faster than a jogger during my outbound uphill commute.

I intend to ride upon this ridiculous two-wheeled machine on a few occasions and update you with my progress. Will I beat veteran runners? Will the chihuahua outpace me? Or will I revel in my glory of overtaking toddlers on their balance bikes?

Go Sarah go go go! Fab project. Very support for those who're having to rebuild a life after relationship breakdown, fleeing abuse and all the other things that can get in the way of people's plans.
