For many women, getting a job is a lifeline. It is a chance to escape poverty, gain financial stability and restore confidence. In the shadow of the cost of living crisis, there is an intensified need for the Smart Works service.

Smart Works is a UK charity that dresses and coaches unemployed women for their job interview. They give women the confidence they need to reach their full potential, secure employment and transform their lives. In the last year, 72% got a job within a month of their appointment.

Between 23rd February and 8th March 2024, I will be cycling to raise vital funds for Smart Works. I will be pedalling for a purpose and would appreciate every pound you are able to give to support this brilliant charity.

That's what they all said as I told of how nervous I was before I started..... I was a jumble of nerves and worries. I was all over the place nobbly, wobbly, bobbly as my friend Nina would say. 

A challenge is a challenge so I started in earnest and kept on pedalling apologising to anyone who saw me wobbling and bobbling about around the bike paths of Edinburgh. Then slowly, slowly day by day as I got back on with legs of jelly it came, the confidence that I could do it, the freedom, enjoying exploring the coast, the parks, the cut throughs, the sights, working out how it all joined up  - feeling the wind against my face with the bright blue skies of early Spring willing me on - that blue always made me think of Smart Works and all those who had so generously sponsored me and why I was doing to the challenge. It has been a fantastic experience.
